Hamidah's Story

Hamidah Nakiwala

Hamidah Nakiwala is a hard working woman with an infectious smile and positive spirit. She is a true example of self-empowerment amidst her impoverished community.

Living with her parents she attended school until she was 19 but had to withdraw because she became pregnant. The only way she could support her family was to work in a stone quarry, under the sweltering sun, with little water, and eating only once per day.   However, after 5 years of hard labor she joined the Namugongo Good Samaritan Project (NGSP) and started working with beads.

NGSP has taught Hamidah the importance of hygiene and preventing and testing for HIV/AIDS. Also, having gained entrepreneurship skills through NGSP, she now owns her own restaurant and tailoring business while selling tea in her free time. Hamidah is a consummate example to her children while creating a positive, healthy environment. Hamidah is working to buy her own plot of land and build a home for her family.
